Pre Order the New Xbox 360 Slim Console

We are now taking preorder's for the latest Xbox 360 console (aka Xbox 360 Slim, Xbox 360 S) set to set to debut in South Africa on the 1st October and bundled with Kinect from November.

This latest console release from Microsoft is more of a nip/tuck type update to the already popular 360 console, apart from receiving a cosmetic facelift thankfully Microsoft have included some major changes to the device’s hardware in order to improve performance, reliability as well as gaming experience.

Although the new console has a new slimmer and slicker design, it has kept the classic design elements of the original Xbox 360 console. The console comes in Black and depending on which model you order the case is finished off with a matte or glossy finish.

Microsoft has moved to a unified Xenon CPU (45nm process) and GPU chip which has resulted in a 50% smaller chip. Power consumption too has been reduced by up to 60%. The old two fan cooling system has been replaced by a larger single fan which produces less ambient noise without compromising cooling performance.

Thanks to the hard drive slotting into an internal slot the new Xbox doesn’t have the ‘hard drive hump’ associated with the original model. The number of USB ports were also bumped up to five three in the front and two in the back, a dedicated port for the Kinect sensor is also new to the mix.

Lastly and most exciting Microsoft has committed to bring the Live network to South Africa officially before year end, for those who love to play online, there is now a wireless 802.11 N network adapter built into the console so you don't have to fork out any extra money to utilise Xbox Live over your Wi-Fi.

What is a Gigapan image?

A Gigipan image is a high resolution digital photograph that has an actual resolution much higher than the camera is capable of taking. This is achieved by zooming the camera in to the maximum (optical) zoom and taking a photograph, the camera is then moved left and right up and down and lots of high zoom images are taken. Back at your PC the computer stitches the photo’s together and merges all the photo’s into one large image. Images can then be uploaded to the http://gigapan.org/ for friends to view and explore the image. Notes can be added, and the image can be geotagged. Smalls details can be found by zooming in on the image and exploring.

The software to stitch the photos together has been available for sometime, however taking the photographs has never been an easy task. Luckily Gigapan systems has built a motorized tripod mount that you mount your camera on that not only does precise movements of the camera to capture the whole seen, but also has adapters available to fit most Digital SLR camera’s to capture all the images electronically. Unique features of the Slide HD

Working at Have2Have, I get to play with a lot of gadgets.

Unfortunately, the problem with this is that you realise that most gadgets in people’s homes have the cool or wow factor but they are seldom used.

Just the other day, I played with a WordLock. Now it may just look like a regular lock but there is a twist to it. The passcode is made up of letters rather than numbers, so you secure the lock with an easy to remember word, instead of a number! With 10 000 different combinations, guessing your secret word is virtually impossible – unless you use your name of course.

The WordLock is available in a variety of formats including luggage locks, padlocks, sports lock, and cable locks.

You’ve got to hand it to Apple. The Cupertino-based company knows how to create excitement in anticipation for a device that was all but a figment of our imagination only last week. For the last two weeks there has been non-stop speculation by industry experts on Twitter, blogs, forums and even just general chit-chat about an Apple device resembling a Tablet PC which would change the computing world forever.

Well Apple managed to pull it off yet again by announcing the latest addition to their product range, the iPad. It’s said to fill the gap between laptops and smart phones, and will change the way you browse the internet, read emails, view photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, and read eBooks on the go. The iPad features an LED backlit 9-inch multi-touch screen, with storage ranging from 16GB to 64GB and packs a powerful 1Ghz Apple-branded processor, with multi-thread capabilities to ensure that your Apps always run smoothly.

It’s also a lightweight, weighing under 700 grams and is 1.3cm thick. The battery is said to give 10 hours usage and have a standby time of over a month.

There are two distinct models available, both feature Wifi (802.11N) but 3G is only available on select models.

The iPad runs the same software as what is used on the iPhone, but has been tweaked to take advantage of the bigger, higher resolution screen.

Apple’s hugely popular App Store is preloaded to the iPad giving you access to over 140 000 apps for the iPhone. It also has the ability to transform the image size from that of the iPhone to fill the entire screen.

Even though the iPad looks great and boasts some great features there are some unknowns which should be cleared up over the next few weeks.

Phone Calls; will the 3G models be able to make and accept phone calls over the GSM network? A Bluetooth headset will be available from Apple which might hint towards it doing so.

iBook Store; does Apple have plans on making the book store available worldwide or will it be limited to certain regions?

Supply and demand; With the device being in huge demand, will Apple be able to keep everyone happy with stock readily available?

Cons

Not everything can be perfect, and the downside of the iPad are noticeable.

The iPad uses a new type of sim card known as a micro sim card (3FF sim), most service providers around the world do not offer this yet. At this point only T-Mobile USA has confirmed that it will be adopting this format imminently. This limits the possibility of using the device internationally, albeit that the device is not locked to a specific carrier.

Camera, most devices these days have at least one camera (most smart phones two) but the iPad is short in this department and would prohibit you from making video calls via Skype, Google Talk or any other similar service.

Just like the iPhone the iPad is not able to run multiple Apps at once. This is rumored to be sorted out in the next version Of the software.

Apple has released the long acticipated tablet, called the iPad. They are available in three sizes namely 16GB, 32Gb and 64GB as well as two connectivity options. All the iPads come with built in Wifi 802.11N but 3G is available on a seperate model.

One of the biggest buzz words making its rounds this year has to be E-ink E-Readers. Multiple manufactures have entered into an all out battle to become the number one e-reader available.

First for those who do not know or are not quite sure about what a e-reader is and what it does.
Well the concept is simple, it’s a digital book. The newest e-readers utilize the latest in electronic Paper Display’s (aka e-ink) which have amazing properties that make it look as close to real paper as possible. The display’s are different from conventional LCD in that they can display the books “pages” without utilizing any power from the battery which results in longer battery life. The e-ink displays also reflect light just like real pages do, so there is no glare when reading in bright light or outside in the sun. They are generally much easier on the eyes than regular screens such as that of your laptop.

Beyond Books
Most e-readers support a large range of e-book formats which allow you to not just to read books, but also to view a large variety of content from newspapers, magazines, PDF documents, Microsoft Word doc’s, graphs, pictures and even HTML to name a few.

The newer readers now offer audio file playback with MP3 and Audible files supported. Some feature text to speech where the e-reader will read or newspaper article or book to you.

Storage and Connectivity
E-readers are developing at a super fast pace with ever increasing amounts of storage and connectivity options. E-Readers generally come with built in memory with some offering up to almost 4GB with certain models allowing expansion via a memory card. This built in memory allows you to store 1000’s of books at any point in time. The majority of e-readers offer connectivity via USB to your PC and/or MAC, with some going beyond this and adding built in 3G and GPRS support such as the Amazon Kindle which now has full wireless 3G support in the USA.

Travel
E-readers make travelling great, they are small and lightweight, yet they can hold thousands of books which you would not be able to take with if they were all regular print. The long battery life makes it travel friendly. It’s like take a library on holiday with you.

Green
There is an added important benefit to using e-readers, the reduction in the number of books printed will result in a considerable reduction in greenhouse gas emission as well and the destruction of forests around the world.

Generally the price of eBooks are lower than that of regular printed books, you also save money and even stress by not having to travel to the nearest book store. eBooks can be purchased online from a variety of websites, and some e-reader manufactures even offer their own marketplace such as Amazon which claims to have 360,000 eBooks available at present. With the growing popularity of e-readers the number of books available will grow at a continuously increasing pace.

The other added benefit to the growing number of books available is the simplicity of publishing eBooks, this makes it much cheaper and easier for authors to get there work out to their readers.

Most e-readers have updatable firmware allowing the manufactures to add more features as time go by. Some other useful features include being able to search the entire book, highlight words and paragraphs and add/edit notes.

Accessibility
Not all of us have twenty twenty vision luckily e-readers have font size settings allowing you to increase the font size to suit your vision. The text to speech features of an e-reader are beneficial to the blind, with reader being able to read books out aloud.

New iPod Line up

Apple has announced the latest updates to the iPod family with each model getting a makeover in one way or another.

The most changes have been made to the iPod nano, which now boasts a camera, FM radio, pedometer, Nike+ integration, built-in microphone, and Voiceover.

The new nano supports live pausing and iTunes tagging while listening to the radio. The built-in pedometer and Nike+ support makes the nano even more suitable for your workouts.

Any videos reordered on the nano can be uploaded to YouTube or Facebook from within iTunes.

The other iPod which received a lot of attention is the Touch which is now shipping with the latest firmware 3.1.1. The 16GB and 32GB model also have a new processor which supports OpenGL ES Version 2.0 allowing developers to take gaming on the device to the next level.

A feature of the new firmware is Genius Mixes which acts like your personal DJ. It finds songs in your library which goes together and creates playlists, without you having to do anything.

Playstation 3 Slim

Sony recently announced the release of the updated Playstation 3 Slim. As the name suggests, the shape of the updated console has remained the same but it has shrunk by approximately 33 percent, making it more space-friendly. The outer shell has been coated with a matt finish. Personally, I think this is great as there will be less time spent wiping finger marks from the console and more time for gaming. The buttons are no longer touch-sensitive. Sony has opted to replace them with actual "push" buttons (power and eject). The PS3 is also adorned with a redesigned logo. The Playstation 3 Slim ships with a new 45nm (opposed to the old 65nm) processor, which is said to improve energy efficiency by 34 percent as well as improved performance. The processor, which is a joint development between IBM, Sony, and Toshiba, is produced using a new production technique.

Added benefits for those Sony loyalists are improved XMB integration between Sony HDTVs connected via HDMI to the PS3 Slim. The improvement allows you to control the PS3 menu via your Bravia TV remote control. The console will also shut down in sync with your Bravia TV when you put it into standby mode.

Other changes are that there are only two USB ports, the option to install Linux has been removed, and a vertical stand will be required to stand the console upright.

So cracked the Rubik’s Cube? Looking for a new challenge to take on? Well, the creator of the Rubik’s Cube, Ernő Rubik, has come to the rescue with the Rubik’s 360 which is set to become one of the fastest-selling puzzles this year.

Let’s take a closer look at the Rubik’s 360 considering its launch is imminent. It consists of three spheres which are placed one inside the other with each being able to move on its own axis. The puzzle requires the player to manoeuvre the six coloured balls from the inner sphere of the puzzle all the way to the outer sphere via a middle sphere which only has two holes for the balls to pass through. The balls then need to be placed in the matching colour domes. Just thinking about the whole process gives me a headache. If you’re the patient type, this may be just what you are looking for.

Prison Break The Final Break

As the finale of Prison Break season 4 came to an end, I’m sure you were clinging to the end of your seats to see how Michael Scofield, Lincoln Burrows, and the rest of the group were going to get out of their predicament and how this awarding-winning series is going to come to an end. I don’t want to spoil it for those of you who have not gotten around to watching it yet, but it was a very unexpected ending.

The season was the last for the series but fret not. Those of us who are looking for the loose ends to be tied up and gaps to be filled, can watch “Prison Break: The Final Break” movie. Specially commissioned to be released directly on DVD and Blu-ray on 21 July, the movie is said to put the exclamation point at the end of a four-year-long sentence.

Round 1 of the Have2Have Picasso competition is closed

We have had some really great entries for the first round of our Picasso Design competition. Just a quick bit of background to those new to the competition, we asked designers to design a Web site for a charity of their choice. I was really impressed with the designs we have received and I am sure the charities will be too.

The five designers who have made it through to round two have been notified and the brief has been sent out. All we need to do now is wait in anticipation to see what these amazing designers have in store for us.
